Civil engineering Thesis Learning Outcomes
The civil engineering final year project is designed to meet the six learning outcomes which are outlined below. Remember that this is a learning process and that while you will possess all of the basic skills which you need to complete the civil engineering thesis already, you will certainly need to develop those skills and obtain substantial further knowledge if you are to achieve a high overall mark. Your supervisor will be able to help to guide you with this process, but fundamentally you must do the hard work yourself. Throughout the course of your civil engineering dissertation, you should constantly aim to demonstrate that you have mastered the ability to do the following things:
- Conceptualise: You should be able to identify a problem or requirement and work towards a solution.
- Planning and time management: You should be able to prioritise what needs to be done, create a plan and ensure that it is carried out on time.
- Research: You should be able to search for high quality information from respected sources. Review the information and report upon what it tells you about a problem or solution.
- Technical content: You should demonstrate the ability to work at a high technical level. Show that you have a deep understanding of your project and include substantial analysis.
- Communication: You should be able to communicate complex technical ideas through written and oral channels. Show that you have developed a strong technical vocabulary and that you can maintain attention to detail when writing a long document.
- Critical evaluation: You should show that you have the ability to identify the really important aspects of your project. Write authoritative conclusions with credible justification to back them up.
